Voice of Space: UFOs and Paranormal Phenomena

René Magritte, Voice of Space (La voix des airs), 1931.

The idea of life beyond Earth has fascinated artists for generations. In 1913, René Magritte painted Voice of Space, which showed three silver bells hovering in a blue sky above a Renaissance-like landscape. “I caused the iron bells hanging from the necks of our admirable horses to sprout like dangerous plants at the edge of an abyss,” he wrote. These surreal visions continue to shape our imagination of space: flying saucers landing in fields, green men within. This exhibition at the Drawing Center explores the cultural, psychological, and metaphysical dimensions of paranormal phenomena through contemporary art, historical works, and drawing. Magritte’s painting serves as a point of departure. —Elena Clavarino
