Whether you think him a Renaissance man or a Jack of all Trades, Cecil Beaton was formidable. Writer, illustrator, caricaturist, the King of Vogue and an Oscar-winning costume designer—he did it all. But above all, Beaton was a photographer. He first floated up during the Jazz Age, then captured the interwar’s “Bright Young Things”—a set that was socially and sexually daring, some of whom were aristocratic or artistic. Later came the icons: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, and, of course, Queen Elizabeth II and her family. In this exhibition, 200 items, including photographs, letters, sketches, and costumes, offer a tantalizing glimpse into Beaton’s beautiful world. —Elena Clavarino
