Georg Baselitz began inverting his figures in 1969—painting them upside down as a way of subordinating subject to paint, forcing the eye to attend to color, mark, and surface rather than readable meaning. Asked why, he answered that he was more interested in the painting than the thing it depicted. “Baselitz: Avanti” is the first major exhibition in Italy devoted to the artist’s printmaking—woodcuts, etchings, aquatints—a body of work that runs parallel to his painting yet has not received the same attention. Baselitz died on April 30, 2026, and this show of 170 works includes prints made during the last year of his life. —Elena Clavarino
