In Glee, Ryan Murphy’s early 2000s TV show about a struggling high school glee club, the main character Rachel Berry—played by Lea Michele—dreams of just one thing: Broadway. Competitive, confident, and undeniably talented, she eventually makes it in the show’s final season, her big break coming as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Seven years later, Glee fans were given the ultimate full-circle moment: Michele headed to Broadway to play Fanny in the real 2022 revival. She’s now starring in Chess, a new musical about two world champion chess players—played by Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher—whose rivalry turns even more personal when they fall for the same woman. The score is by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA and the EGOT winner Tim Rice, the book is by Danny Strong, and direction comes from Michael Mayer, who also directed Michele in Funny Girl. —Jeanne Malle
