There’s a Spanish film called Ocho Apellidos Vascos, which tells of a girl from the Basque Country who falls for a Sevillano. Her eight Basque last names are testament to historical pride, how for centuries the Basque people have asserted their identity again and again. The artist and sculptor Eduardo Chillida, born in San Sebastián—his Basque last name is actually spelled Txillida—honored his home region through his choice of medium. Ironworking, an important, long-practiced craft of the Basque Country, forms the backbone of many Chillida sculptures. Forged iron, in particular, connects his modernist abstractions to ancestral blacksmithing traditions. A new exhibition reverberates between past and present, region and reach, weight and space. —Carolina de Armas
