That Was Then

In the 1970s, fashion photography acquired a threatening edge as Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, and Chris von Wangenheim brought a psychological subtext to their provocative, confrontational images. In his 1976 ad for Christian Dior fine jewelry, von Wangenheim showed model Lisa Taylor with her delicate, jeweled wrist locked in the jaws of a Doberman, as if the guard dog had turned on its charge. The contrast gave Taylor’s perfect beauty a sense of danger. But someone at Dior had a sense of humor. The campaign was called “Fetching is Your Dior.” Such a good boy! —Linda Wells
