At East 13th Street’s Stock Vintage, Melissa Howard knows better, selling peerless workwear and sterling relics of Americana past for less than she could fairly charge. Alongside her “co-owner”—rescue dog Hazel—Melissa supplies East Village hipsters, Japanese collectors, and professional designers with everything from immaculate Big Mac denim overalls to impossible-to-find Brown’s Beach jackets. Really, it’s as much a museum as it is a shop, and the generic name seems to be a mere diversion tactic to keep uncurious shoppers at bay. —Nathan King
