Latteria San Marco

Arturo and Maria Maggi in front of their Milan restaurant.

Via S. Marco, 24, 20121 Milano MI, Italy

Anyone from the fashion crowd will rave about Latteria di San Marco, a small spot in Brera which has been open for more than 40 years. While the owners, Maria and Arturo, are in their 80s, they are showing no signs of slowing down. She serves the restaurant’s eight tables, and he cooks. Dedicated patrons come multiple times a week, because the food feels as light as something you’d cook in your own kitchen. Arturo considers himself an alchemist, and has written a book about his theories. He has cooked in solid silver pans (which he orders from a jeweler, next door) since 1998, and changes the menu based on the phases of the moon. Order the spaghetti al limone, the zucchiniin mustard sauce, and the artichokes with potatoes if they’re available, but bear in mind that offerings change daily. Luca Guadagnino, Keith Haring, and White House chefs are known to be regulars there. —Elena Clavarino
