The French New Wave director Éric Rohmer loved beautiful restless people. Many of his 25 feature films observe them lounging, vacationing, falling in love, and falling out of love. Recently restored and released by Janus Films, Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons, a quartet of comedies, captures the wandering and the wayward during each season. These languid movies, filmed between 1989 and 1998 in cities and suburbs around France, pay special attention to a milieu obsessed with romance—both real and imagined. —J.D.
