The Oscar-winning films of the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos are surreal, self-contained worlds. His photographs push that vision even further. “It is so much freer,” Lanthimos has said, comparing photography to filmmaking.” It feels like there are fewer rules tied to conventional narrative.” Ahead of his return to the Academy Awards, where his latest film Bugonia has four nominations, a new exhibition chronicles his photographs—four bodies of work spanning five years. Many of the 182 photos offer insight into his films Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. They’re also a personal ode to his Grecian roots. Lanthimos details mundane walks around Athens and ventures on the Aegean Sea. The exhibition is designed as an ancient Greek temple, in which an altar-like space features 110 works that have never before been shown to the public. —Maggie Turner
