A fear of war remains constant through the generations, but the symbols of war change. In antiquity, it was bronze shields, helmets, and swords. The First World War brought trenches and gas masks. And modern warfare conjures drones and threats of mushroom clouds. This exhibition in Cambridge brings together objects fashioned across eras—from shell cases and ammunition tins to instruments of killing. Prints, messages home, and tributes to the fallen appear throughout, telling the stories of soldiers, civilians, and prisoners. —Elena Clavarino
