The Villa Carmignac sits on Porquerolles, a small island off the Var coast accessible only by ferry, which has kept it closer to the South of France of myth than the one of mass tourism. The exhibition “Sea, Pop, and Sun” takes that paradise—and the Golden Age it once embodied—as its subject. Over 80 works, by artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Evelyne Axell, Martial Raysse, Judy Chicago, and Cosima von Bonin, trace Pop and contemporary encounters with the sea, the sun, and the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 70s.
