Tracey Emin / Edvard Munch: The Loneliness of the Soul

May 18 – Aug 1, 2021
Burlington House, Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0BD, UK

“I’ve been in love with this man since I was eighteen,” the contemporary artist Tracey Emin has said of Edvard Munch, a Norwegian pioneer of Expressionism. In 1998, Emin even went to visit Munch’s native Oslo, and created a video piece on the jetty where he painted many of his subjects. Like Munch, Emin is known for her raw portrayal of personal moments (as the cliché puts it, she wears her heart on her sleeve). For this exhibition, Emin has selected 19 of the artist’s oils and watercolors from the Munch Museum’s collection and archives. Twenty-five of her own works—paintings, neons, and sculptures—are placed alongside them, in affinity. —E.C.
