Since antiquity, boxing has expressed both hypermasculine aggression and Olympian grace. It has also had a profound influence on visual art. Now exhibiting over 90 works created between the late–19th-century and today, the Norton Museum of Art explores the sport’s historical presence in painting, photography, and sculpture. The title of the show is borrowed from a Gabriele Tinti poem inspired by the Ancient Greek sculpture Boxer at Rest, dated 329 B.C. Politics, social justice, and sensationalism are just a few of the subjects that lurk within images of this old, old sport. —Lucy Horowitz
