“Stitching, the repetitiveness of it, becomes like a meditation,” Billie Zangewa told Bomb magazine in 2020. “It brings me to a place of peace, a centered place of power.” Born in Malawi and raised in Botswana, the artist fondly recalls watching her mother sew with a group of women each week. She herself learned to sew at nine, already appreciating the therapeutic qualities of the craft. After starting her career in fashion and advertising, where she honed her textile skills, Zangewa became an artist, creating collages from hand-stitched pieces of raw silk. In scenes set in domestic interiors and urban landscapes, she challenges stereotypes of Black women. Since the pandemic, Zangewa has increasingly addressed the greater human experience, focusing on sociopolitical issues and the interconnectedness of all living things. She presents new and recent multi-media work in this solo show. —Jeanne Malle
