To the Holy Sepulcher: Treasures from the Terra Sancta Museum

Oct 2, 2025 – Jan 5, 2026
1 E 70th St, New York, NY 10021, USA

Consecrated in 335 A.D. in Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is known as one of the holiest places in Christianity. Believed to be the setting of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, the historic site has accrued a magnificent catalogue of ornate objects—gifts bestowed by Catholic leaders during the 17th and 18th centuries. Gilded thrones, altars, and crucifixes characterize this era of biblical splendor. Preserved by Franciscans and used minimally in Mass, this collection of over 40 rediscovered objects offers a rare showcase of European Catholic opulence. The artifacts now come to North America for the first time, finding a perfect setting at Manhattan’s recently reopened Frick Collection. —Maggie Turner
