Since studying with sculptors Peter Dreher and Horst Antes in the 1960s, Anselm Kiefer has returned, again and again, to questions of myth, death, and memory. It is, as he once put it, an attempt to give form to “the incomprehensible and the non-representational.” The series on view in this exhibition began in 2023 as a response to this palazzo, bombed in 1943. The 40 large-scale canvases that make up “The Alchemists” continue Kiefer’s long meditation on devastation—and on what remains. What does a place remember, long after history has moved on? —Elena Clavarino
