With bits of orange, pink, and blue drawn from LGBTQI flags, and things like ceramic carnations, pansy petals, song lyrics, and gold leaf, the young British artist Michaela Yearwood-Dan meditates on queerness and femininity. “My work doesn’t show my figure or the Black figure,” she has explained. “It doesn’t show women in that kind of figurative context; it doesn’t show spaces and scenes and landscapes.” It is, she argues, more indirect than that. In her first museum show in the U.K., Yearwood-Dan presents a major new commission incorporating painting, drawing, ceramics, furniture, and sound. —Elena Clavarino
