Ruby Sky Stiler unmoors women from motherhood and gives their domestic responsibilities to men. She portrays women in the act of painting or reading or playing with animals. “I’m often exploring and updating established archetypes,” Stiler says. “For example, the historical trope of the portrait in the mirror is a common self-aggrandizing gesture for a male painter. I’ve placed the female figure—often the object—in that empowered position.” The exhibition’s title, “Blue Studio,” nods to two paintings by Matisse: Red Studio and Blue Nude. —Clara Molot
