How did Jacob Elordi go from Netflix’s nauseating The Kissing Booth (and The Kissing Booth 2 and The Kissing Booth 3) to such fine performances in Priscilla and Saltburn? It can’t just be that he was directed, respectively, by Sofia Coppola and Emerald Fennell—whatever you think of those two films, it’s clear Elordi has undergone a change. Cast as Heathcliff in Fennell’s forthcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights—completing his arc from lowbrow to high—Elordi can currently be seen in the miniseries The Narrow Road to the Deep North. It’s based on Richard Flanagan’s 2013 novel, the story of a doctor whose regiment is captured during W.W. II and sent to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, where they’re forced to work on the infamous “Burma Death Railway.” Elordi delivers a performance on par with the show’s excellence. —Jack Sullivan
