The Mexican artist Raúl de Nieves makes work that is synonymous with joy. His sculptures are multicolored, encrusted with everything from pieces of stained-glass to beads, bangles, sequins, and bells. The embellishment is over the top, but built in are references to Mexican religious ceremonies, folklore, and traditional costumes, as well as symbols of queer club culture. These figures, along with a 27-pane faux stained-glass window picturing all kinds of creatures, will now transform the lobby of the Baltimore Art Museum. And make sure you look up, for De Nieves has also created a chandelier that depicts a human in a cocoon. —Elena Clavarino
