In his 2017 painting Untitled, the artist Marlon Mullen reimagined a 2017 cover of Artforum, which featured a painting by Kerry James Marshall of a Black artist dabbing a palette. Mullen’s version transformed the figurative image into an abstract mosaic of green, black, yellow, and pink. More recently, Mullen reimagined Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night in a similarly bold color-block style. His artistic intentions remain unknown, as Mullen is almost entirely nonverbal and on the autism spectrum. Nevertheless, Mullen is now the first developmentally disabled person to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. “I think he feels understood through his painting,” his sister has said, “and that gives him a way to talk to the world.” —Paulina Prosnitz
