Barbie to Anna Karenina: The Cinematic Worlds of Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer

6607 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90036, United States

Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer are British experts in set design and decoration, respectively. They met while working at the BBC in London and have been collaborating ever since; eventually, they both relocated to Los Angeles. Known for a visual style richly atmospheric and emotionally expressive, they brought a fresh sensibility to Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice (2005), opting for realism over pristine Regency interiors. The Bennet home is timeworn and cluttered, filled with scruffy furniture and everyday mess; Mr. Bingley’s house is spartanly elegant. The duo continued to collaborate on Atonement (2007), Anna Karenina (2012), Darkest Hour (2017), and, most recently, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023). They have been nominated for seven Oscars. This exhibition explores their creative process, addressing the question: How does the visual concept of a movie serve its story? —Elena Clavarino
