Platform: Tomashi Jackson—The Land Claim

July 11 – Nov 7, 2021
279 Montauk Hwy, Water Mill, NY 11976, United States

Back in January 2020, the Houston-born artist Tomashi Jackson traveled to Long Island’s East End to interview people in communities of color. She had in-depth conversations with members of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities, and unearthed a great deal of unexpected information. Talks with a citizen of the Shinnecock Nation were especially revelatory, and Jackson discovered that the exorbitantly expensive land of Long Island held a history of violence and appropriation. Jackson’s resulting multimedia work “The Land Claim”—which includes paintings, photography, sound, and archival materials—brings a little known story to light. —E.C.
