In the early 2000s, the First Nations artist Kent Monkman discovered his two-spirit alter ego. She was called Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, and she had much to say. Monkman created her, he says, to “present a very empowered point of view of Indigenous sexuality pre-contact. We had our own traditions of gender and sexuality that didn’t fit the male-female binary.” While Monkman, in paintings, films, performance, and installations, explores dark subjects such as the genocide of America’s Indigenous peoples, Testickle brings a sexy, sassy angle to his work. “She allows me to be more playful.” This exhibition presents 41 monumental works by the artist. —Elena Clavarino
