Shirin Neshat: Born of Fire

Shirin Neshat, Simin, from the “Land of Dreams” series, 2019.

279 Montauk Hwy, Water Mill, NY 11976

Shirin Neshat has lived in exile since the 1970s, when she moved to the U.S. to study at the University of Southern California. Neshat didn’t know it yet, but that decision would alter the course of her life. In 1979, the Iranian Revolution toppled the Shah and brought Ruhollah Khomeini to power. Visiting home was now dangerous, and Neshat wouldn’t see her family for two decades. In the 1990s, when she visited briefly, she saw how Islamic law had devastated the lives of women. Since then, Neshat has been creating stylized photographs that explore oppression, resistance, and displacement. In this exhibition—her first in the New York area in more than 20 years—four of Neshat’s most important bodies of work are on view. —Elena Clavarino
