Sean Scully: The Albee Barn, Montauk

Sean Scully, Elder, 1982.

May 11 – Sept 21, 2025
279 Montauk Hwy, Water Mill, NY 11976

“My job is to return abstraction to the people,” Sean Scully has said, “in a sense, to popularize it without lowering the bar.” Scully is known for paintings that use dense colors and horizontal bars to tell stories, a practice he began in the summer of 1982, in Montauk. Working in a small barn while on an Edward F. Albee Foundation fellowship, he began creating multi-panel works inspired by small stacks of wood, letting his brushstrokes flow freely across the canvas. In doing so, he moved beyond minimalism. This exhibition recalls that pivotal summer, setting 15 original Montauk paintings alongside 70 other works that Scully himself has selected. It’s been 43 years. —Elena Clavarino
