Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion

Nov 21, 2026 – Apr 11, 2027
100 34th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121, United States

Azzedine Alaïa (1935–2017) trained as a sculptor before turning to fashion—and it shows. Born in Tunisia and based in Paris, Alaïa became one of fashion’s most exacting designers, overseeing every stage of his garments, from cutting to fitting, and oh what a fit. He famously ignored the fashion calendar, showing collections only when he was satisfied with them. His body-hugging dresses, sculpted knits, and leather corsets made him a favorite of Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, Tina Turner, and Michelle Obama. The Legion of Honor is now staging the first major U.S. retrospective of Alaïa’s work, displaying some of his best-known designs alongside pieces from his personal collection, including garments by Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, and Madeleine Vionnet. —Elena Clavarino
