“You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll clap, you’ll stomp,” says Dolly Parton. “It truly is a Grand Ol’ Opera.” At 79, the queen of country music continues to surprise us all. After decades on the stage, she’s now stepped to the sidelines and into the writer’s chair. But this is Dolly Parton, after all, so she’s hardly in the shadows. Parton has adapted her own life into a musical, tracing her path from a one-room cabin without running water in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee to stardom in Hollywood. Three actresses play Parton at different ages, singing some of her best-known hits, from “I Will Always Love You” to “Jolene” to “9 to 5,” as well as new songs created for the production.
