Paul Cézanne was referred to as an “artist’s artist.” Picasso called him “the father of us all.” Though categorized as a Post-Impressionist, Cézanne is widely recognized as a nascent modernist, his analytical approach to painting paving the way to Cubism. He died in 1906, and here we are, no less in awe of his color palette, his still lifes, and his brushstrokes, so earthy yet ethereal, concrete yet fleeting. Featuring 80 oil paintings, this exhibition is the first major presentation of Cézanne at Fondation Beyeler. —Elena Clavarino
