Back in 1970s Britain, Helen Chadwick and Penny Slinger were fearless. The two young artists smashed taboos, candidly exploring female subjectivity and sexual desire. Chadwick died at 42 from a heart attack. Slinger now lives in California and is often called a feminist surrealist. The new exhibition at Richard Saltoun time travels to their beginnings. It include Chadwick’s earliest performance, Domestic Sanitation, which was the last work she did for her degree at Brighton Polytechnic in 1976: performing housework in latex costumes, the artist and three friends have morphed into female furniture. Also on view is work from Slinger’s 1971 graduation project for Chelsea College. In 50% The Visible Woman, Slinger uses her own body as a subject, a Surrealist strategy that critiques the male gaze. —Clara Molot
