Arnulf Rainer has been called Austria’s most important living artist. His career has been long and multifaceted. In the 1960s and 70s, Rainer was close to the Vienna Actionism movement, in which artists conjured body art and paintings while on hard drugs. He made Hiroshima and the bomb a continuing subject. Between 1983 and 1992, Rainer worked on “Goya,” a series that paid tribute to Francisco de Goya’s dark surrealism. His “Landscape” series combines images of nature with his characteristic gestural overpainting. This exhibition, which coincides with the artist’s 95th birthday, places both these magical series on view. —Elena Clavarino
