María Berrío: Waiting for the Night to Bloom

Mar 25 – May 9, 2021
1450 S Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, FL 33401, United States

The Columbian artist María Berrío uses papers from South America and Japan to create vibrant, large-scale collages that evoke myths, fairy tales, and dreams in a magical-realist style. Her subjects are usually women, moon pale, indomitable in spirit. They inhabit ethereal landscapes and modest interiors, often wearing solemn expressions. Though Berrío’s scenes appear otherworldly, all are loosely autobiographical. “These are the women I want to be: strong, vulnerable, compassionate, courageous, and in harmony with themselves and nature.” —E.C.
