The artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah is known for his investigations into memory, postcolonialism, and aesthetics. In 1982, with a handful of other multimedia artists, he cofounded the Black Audio Film Collective. Until it was dissolved in 1998, the collective made acclaimed films—poetic, political, influential—that examined Black identity within the British experience. In this exhibition, Akomfrah reimagines some of his most experimental work, including commissions for the British Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. In 2023, when asked about his creative process, Akomfrah said, “I find that it’s always a case of starting somewhere with a set of questions, and in the process of trying to answer those questions either larger questions appear or a shape of an answer appears. I follow it all in a very improv jazz-performer-like way.” —Elena Clavarino
