A Hauser & Wirth outpost sits on Illa del Rei, a small island in Menorca’s harbor that has a complicated history of occupation and passage. It’s been a naval base, a British colonial outpost, and a field hospital. Rashid Johnson, who organized this summer’s group show there, chose his artists accordingly. Among 28 artists—most of whom work at the intersection of displacement, colonial history, and identity—are Mona Hatoum, Rayyane Tabet, Ali Cherri, Firelei Báez, Lorna Simpson, and Yto Barrada. The artworks populate the galleries and the island’s outdoor landscape. Johnson asked three of the artists—Báez, Charles Gaines, and Cristina Iglesias—to nominate additional participants from outside the gallery’s roster. —Elena Clavarino
