Born in London to parents who immigrated to the U.K. from St. Lucia, the Black British photographer Jennie Baptiste is just one product of the Windrush movement, the term given to the mass migration of Caribbean people who assisted in rebuilding Great Britain after W.W. II. Building off of her parent’s experiences, Baptiste has sought to document the impact the Windrush generation had on Britain’s younger Black artists and musicians. Her first major solo exhibition presents photographs taken over three decades and highlights portraits of artists such as Estelle, Nas, and locals from Brixton, arguably the center of Afro-Caribbean culture. Paired with curated D.J. mixes, the experience captures a defining voice in British photography. —Maggie Turner
