In 1533, King Francis I of France commissioned a gift for Pope Clement VII, on the occasion of his son, Henry of Valois, getting married to the pope’s niece, Catherine de’ Medici. It was a tapestry copy of Leonardo’s mural The Last Supper (1494–98), which still adorns the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan. The tapestry is woven from gold and silver covered silk, and represents the strategic alliance between the royal house and the papacy. Around the same time, a baldachin was commissioned by Clement VII and completed by the Brussels tapestry-maker Pieter Van Elst, who delivered the Raphaelesque design to the Sistine Chapel. For this rare show, these two works have traveled from the Vatican collections to Turin. —Elena Clavarino
