James Turrell: Into the Light

1040 Mass MoCA Way, North Adams, MA 01247, USA

“Light is not so much something that reveals,” the California-based artist James Turrell has said, “as it is itself the revelation.” The Light and Space movement—also called California Minimalism—began on the West Coast in the 1960s, and Turrell was one of its pioneers. Over the years, he has turned colored light, fluorescence, and light refractions into pure expression. In its Robert W. Wilson Building, MASS MoCA presents a major work from each decade of Turrell’s career. The galleries have been specially designed to accentuate the installations. —E.C.
