In Solange Pessoa’s native Minas Gerais—a lush, mountainous region in central Brazil—mining is a way of life. Iron ore, gemstones, gold, and other minerals sustain entire communities. Acknowledging this, Pessoa explores the relationship between landscape and body through abstract, dreamlike sculptures, installations, drawings, ceramics, and paintings. She often uses unusual materials such as crystals, soapstone, and clay. “As a child, I collected small stones—some of which I still have,” she has said. “I never stopped collecting them, or observing, feeling, and trying to listen to their silences.” Now, the artist, who lives in Belo Horizonte, has filled the Aspen Art Museum galleries with her work. Silver and quartz crystals beckon. —Elena Clavarino
