In the 20th century, American life was reshaped by the automobile. Cities and towns adapted to cars and their requirements, and with every new highway the country’s vast spaces became more accessible. It was also the century of photography. Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, Edward Weston, and others could drive across the country, capturing its dramatic landscapes, dive bars, and the transformation of a wild West into a capitalist spectacle. This exhibition brings their visions together, and features Emil Otto Hoppé’s groundbreaking 1926 travel series, which was the first of its kind in America. —Elena Clavarino
