In 1914, an emerging modernist art movement called the Vorticists, inspired by Cubism and attempting to go beyond it, were grouping in London. Wyndham Lewis was at the helm, and they published their radical manifesto in Blast magazine. Vorticist paintings were characterized by bold lines and hard color, qualities that represented modern life. There were only two women in the group. One was Helen Saunders, who captured the horrors of mechanized warfare and urban development in her extraordinary drawings. This exhibition, the first devoted to Saunders in 25 years, includes 18 drawings and watercolors. If you’re wondering, the other female Vorticist was Jessica Dismorr. —Elena Clavarino
