In 2016, the artist Cannupa Hanska Luger came across a powerful photograph: it showed women holding mirrors up to the riot police in Ukraine. Shorty afterwards, he made an instructional video that invited people to send mirrored shields to the Dakota Access Pipeline. That same year, the artist Marie Watt used 400 fiber blankets from her community to create a totem-like installation for the U.S. embassy in Islamabad. Luger is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Lakota communities, and Watt is a member of the Seneca Nation. In Denver, the two are exhibited together for the first time, with 26 works on view. Among the sculptures, wall hangings, and installations, there’s a collaborative piece—a giant wolf with a pelt of colorful bandanas. —E.C.
