In 1998, the Italian curator and writer Francesco Bonami called Gabriel Orozco “one of the most influential artists of the decade.” Born in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1962, Orozco repurposes everyday objects, stripping them to their essence and making them new. For instance, he’ll transform rubber from truck tires into inflatable balls, or lumps of clay into a human heart. Orozco often photographs his creations. “What is most important is not so much what people see in the gallery or the museum,” he has said, “but what people see after looking at these things, how they confront reality again.” This large-scale exhibition—which includes 300 works spanning the entirety of Orozco’s career—is his first in Mexico since 2006. An important occasion. —Elena Clavarino
