The Brilliance of the Spanish World: El Greco, Velázquez, Zurbarán

El Greco, Holy Family, 1585.

Until July 27
700 N Art Museum Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53202, United States

We speak of the Renaissance and we think of Italy. Leonardo da Vinci envisioning flying machines. Michelangelo painting the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. Raphael refining the ideals of beauty and harmony. But in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Spaniards, one can argue, were enjoying an equally illuminated period. They had established the first worldwide empire, planting their flags everywhere from Mexico to the Philippines. And they too produced wondrous artistic talents: the Greek-born El Greco, who settled in Toledo; Diego Velázquez, court painter to Philip IV; Francisco de Zurbarán, known for his luminous depictions of monks and martyrs. This exhibition presents more than 50 paintings that dive into the Hispanic Renaissance and Baroque eras. Included are artists you may not have heard of before. —Elena Clavarino
