Among fans of Stanley Kubrick, there are those who think Barry Lyndon is the director’s greatest masterpiece. Adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray’s 1844 novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon, the film follows an Irish rogue and swindler who climbs his way into high society by marrying a wealthy widow. Kubrick’s use of natural candlelight, meticulously composed double shots, deliberate pacing, and restrained performances by Ryan O’Neal, Marisa Berenson, and Patrick Magee bring the story to life. The film seems to wrestle with the words of Heraclitus, the Greek philosopher who said, “Character is destiny.” In honor of its 50th anniversary, Barry Lyndon has been restored in 4K. —Elena Clavarino
