With live music by Michelle Dorrance’s brother, Donovan, and a tribe of 11 New York City hoofers and street dancers, The Center Will Not Hold is decidedly a family affair—blood and otherwise. But this latest from the MacArthur tap genius also testifies to the multitudes even kin contains. The Center Will Not Hold features not just Dorrance’s own post-Savion tap numbers or hip-hop by her pal Ephrat Asherie, but also Detroit jit, House, Chicago footwork, Memphis jookin’, body percussion, and litefeet—that is, pretty much anything grown in this land to do with rhythm and the body.
