When Big Daddy’s family gathers to celebrate his birthday, unease prevails. Secrets dominate the lives of the alcoholic Brick and his wife Maggie, who both loathe Brick’s brother Gooper and his scheming wife Mae. Big Daddy’s illness spawns deception, and the question of his legacy looms large. These are the uncomfortable dynamics in Tennessee Williams’s play from 1955, now adapted by Rebecca Frecknall in an equally uncomfortable production starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love). “It hums with tension and seethes with despair,” writes the Financial Times critic Sarah Hemming, “drawing a link between Williams’s miserable rich family and the feuding dynasty in Succession.—Jeanne Malle
