Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) depicted figures from classical antiquity, but with a twist. Known for his experiments with perspective, and having learned from the master Donatello, Mantegna’s paintings show the influence of sculpture and render human subjects with severity, marble-white skin tones seemingly chiseled into the background. In this exhibition of over 100 works, Mantegna’s oeuvre is on view alongside the art of contemporaries Antonello da Messina, Pisanello, Paolo Uccello, Giovanni Bellini, Cosmè Tura, and, of course, Donatello. —E.C.
