The daughter of Venezuelan parents, Maria Sol Escobar (1930–2016) was born in Paris, grew up there, and then crossed the ocean to make her name. In New York City she became known as “Marisol.” A player in the budding Pop art scene, Marisol worked in many mediums. For a time, she was close to Andy Warhol, who invited her to appear in his early films The Kiss (1963) and 13 Most Beautiful Girls (1964). Virtually world famous in the 60s, Marisol lapsed into obscurity. And yet her drawing is gorgeous and her sculptures, often described as “totemic,” mate folk art stoicism with Surrealism. This exhibition gives the artist a much deserved spotlight. —Elena Clavarino
