What binds together artists Georg Herold, Albert Oehlen, and David Salle? At Galerie Max Hetzler, the answer is a single year—1986. Both Herold and Oehlen’s work comes out of Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Salle was in New York City, capturing its complicated subconscious in painted diptychs and collage-like etchings. —Clara Molot
